It was a baby bird that had fallen out of the kitchen ceiling light panel. Its mother had built a nest inside where the telephone wires came into the little one bedroom home I was living in. There were two babies actually, sadly one died when it fell to the floor. I tried to put the bird back in the nest but I could not reach it. I didn’t know the first thing about raising baby birds so I called the zoo, it was only a common sparrow, and they didn’t want it. They told me I could soak dry dog food in water to a consistency that it would go through a syringe and feed that way. I had no dog food or syringe but I did have a food processor and a basket, so I made a soft place in my basket and laid the baby there. I set my alarm for 5 am and got up with the birds to hunt bugs and worms before I left for work. I found a beetle and one worm. I put them in the processor but found it useless because the worm stayed under the blade. It was gross but I had to feed the bird. I managed to poke a bit of bug and worm into her beak with a drop or two of water and left for work. I told a doctor friend of mine about my ordeal and he gave me two syringes. I stopped and bought some dry puppy chow and headed home half hoping to find the bird still alive.

Baby, as I called her, was alive and I went to work making baby bird food, that wasn’t hard but getting it into her beak was a struggle. I was feeding her regularly and keeping her warm and clean when after a few days I noticed that even though Baby was alive she was not thriving. Call me crazy, but I prayed to God to help me take care of this bird. He impressed upon my heart I needed to love it. I gently cupped Baby in my hands and talked softly to her. I would gently run my finger over her little head and nuzzle close. I moved her to a basket with a lid and took her to work with me. I really did begin to care and love her, she was my baby bird…she was God’s baby bird. Baby began to thrive and grow… that is when I made the connection.

God created not because he had to but because He is love and love is best expressed toward someone or something. We are all God’s creation, therefore, all creation is connected to our Creator through this great love. This great love is what makes the difference between just living and living a fulfilled life, a thriving life!

At times you may be treated disrespectfully but be certain of your dignity and worth because we are created in the image of God. In His image, God made man and woman, saved by grace to be used in this world, to care for his creation, and to glorify Him. Love, true unselfish, selfless love that made the sacrifice regardless of transgressions and faults is the love offered to us. No matter how insignificant or useless you feel God loves you and wants to use you.

Baby grew and I set her free. Every evening when I would get home from work I would call her and she would fly to me for a time before she would fly off again. I try my best to be a good steward of God’s beautifully amazing majestic creation wherever I may go. The small sacrifices or inconveniences I make are small when I think of what he gave for his beloved creation in his Son Jesus, and what Jesus gave for me…for us.

One day all creation will be restored and what a glorious wonderful moment that will be.
