Sports and The Gospels

FourGospelCharts

Sports fans please forgive me, this photograph made me laugh and it reminded me of myself where sports are concerned, better yet it reminded me of a conversation I had years ago and have never forgotten. The conversation centered on the gospels being different and how reliable the Bible is. I was at a loss until I gave thought to sports events I have attended. I would like to share.

I am not what you would call a sports fan; I do not know teams, seasons, athletes …maybe some…no not really. I do like going to sporting events and sports bars though. They are fun and lively and very loud, there is a lot going on at sporting events too. You have the cheerleaders. I love watching the cheerleaders, they remind me of my youth and past flexibility. They remind me also of the extra forty pounds I have gained over the years but today isn’t about weight.

I love the food! Pretzels, nachos with plastic cheese, hot dogs in a dry bun with a cold coke to wash it down. Does it get any better than that? Yes it does! Buffalo wings with ranch dressing, fried pickles with southwest ranch dressing…I’m adding a cold beer here, but I personally don’t drink beer, so I would have another cold coke…extra ice.

I like to people watch. Some are so intent on the game they should be out there playing, you have the group of guys that are half naked and painted up, and there are families with kids and people on dates. The list is endless and I love watching them all. I wonder what they do and what their lives are like when they leave this place of excitement.

Lastly, my favorite is the little guy who runs up and down the field carrying a huge flag. I don’t even remember if it is a US flag or a team flag, I am amazed how he can run so fast that it never touches the ground! Maybe he isn’t so little, it could be the height of where I am sitting or the flag is really that big!

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us what they saw and experienced or learned from their extensive interviews with people who knew Jesus. (Luke 1:1-4) They each have their own style and view of what was most important for them to share, but, just like when the game is over and the final score displayed, when the families pack up their children, the naked guys get dressed and the cheerleaders and players head off the field. Whether it is the game, food, or people who catch your attention, no matter what you report on in the news or discuss at the water cooler, one thing is for certain. No matter how it is told…

Everyone knows who won.
