“Tell Me About Your Jesus”

“Tell Me About Your Jesus”

These words haunt me and still today when I try to put to words who Jesus is, I struggle. Why is that? Who is Jesus, and not just to me but to the world? Why does He matter and why Him?

“Tell me about your Jesus” was spoken to me years ago and I had no answer. Come with me as I work through to get my answer.

God said, “Let there be light.” And for six days His words became what He spoke and it was all perfect. God said, “Let us make mankind in our image” So God created mankind in His image.

Mankind was deceived to think we could be like God. Think like Him, be wise like Him, to be like Him, but it was a lie and our perfect relationship was broken. Like oil and water, God could not be with mankind and mankind could not be with God.

God is holy, pure, complete, eternal and perfect. Mankind’s fellowship with God was broken and death was allowed over all creation.

But, God made a promise:

And I will put enmity

 between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

(enmity: the state of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something)

God covered Adam and Eve’s nakedness with the skin of an innocent animal. They had never seen death. I cannot imagine their horror as they watched an innocent living creature’s lifeblood pour out for the purpose to cover over them. To protect them from the harsh elements they were now living in.

A man, Abram trusted God and obeyed God, even when things seem illogical. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and promised to make his people God’s people. God promised to always be with him, and God always was with Abraham.

God’s people would try to follow God, but trying to be God always got in the way. To cover for these acts against God, these broken laws, these broken relationships, God required a sacrifice. Years of innocent blood being shed to cover these offenses would never pay the debt completely. Mankind could not stop offending God and God could not ignore. He loves us and wants to be with us but the blood of a bird, bull or lamb is not equal to us made in God’s image. Who was worthy? Who had not offended God in some way? Who was perfect?

What a hopeless state we were in. Helpless to save ourselves, helpless to understand the depths of the consequences of our disobedience and separation from our Father, our God.

What is a parent to do for a self-centered child who doesn’t understand, who lacks wisdom and the means to save themselves? A loving parent steps in and makes a way.

That is what God did. He made a way. He came to us, He became like us. Born of a woman, He was fully man. He was able to not offend God because He is fully God.

** I try to keep my post short, so I will continue my thoughts on who Jesus is next week, God willing. May I challenge you? Think and be ready to give an answer if you are ever asked, “Tell me about your Jesus.”**

Peace be with you ~ Mia
